Layers are a perfect way to transition your summer wardrobe into the autumn season. The Kimono style has taken fashion by storm, and it is obvious why. It offers the security and coverage of a cardigan, but instead of being hot and restricting, it is cool, light, and (in most cases) glamorous.
What is a kimono (ki·mo·no)? By definition, it is a long loose robe with wide sleeves and tied with a white sash, originally worn as a formal garment in Japan and now also used elsewhere as a robe. The traditional Kimono has actually been around since the 1600’s. In Japan, these formal robes were only worn by the elite ruling class. Since then, the kimono has evolved and become a trendy outfit accessory of the modern age– and we are so glad!!
Who is wearing kimonos? Everyone. Teens are rocking kimono’s down the hallways of their schools, alongside teachers and administrators who are showing off their kimonos in a more professional ensemble. The kimono itself is an accessory for women of all ages, shapes, and sizes. For that exact reason, kimonos come in a variety of patterns, lengths, and styles to match the beautifully unique personality that lies within every individual woman!
Where can I wear a kimono? Kimonos can be worn casually or professionally. I would say a kimono is appropriate in most situations aside from a very formal event. Shapeless dresses, and baggy outfits are better left without a kimono. Too much loose fitting clothing can be frumpy and add pounds to your appearance. Kimonos are airy and shapeless so they are great for any form fitting outfit–shift dresses, sun dresses, skinny jeans, leggings, shorts, tank tops, the list goes on and on. So, throw on your kimono when you are getting ready for work, school, church, a date, a meeting, or a girls day out full of shopping and mani-pedis!
